SheetCafe is a native desktop editor for .xlsx, .xls, and .csv files - a familiar ribbon-style spreadsheet that opens, edits, and saves real Excel files with high fidelity, without a browser tab.
A full ribbon editor (formula bar, format painter, charts, pivot tables, conditional formatting, data validation, freeze panes, sort/filter) wrapped in a fast, native desktop app - your files round-trip cleanly with Excel, every time.
Highlights
- Real Excel compatibility - open and save
.xlsx/.xls/.csvwith formulas, formats, and charts preserved on every round-trip. - Full ribbon editing - formulas, merge, freeze panes, sort/filter, conditional formatting, charts, pivot tables, data validation, format painter - the works.
- Fast save with
⌘S- overwrites the original file in place, commits the cell you're typing in first, no extra dialog.⌘Nfor a fresh workbook. - Save As Xlsx / Xls / Csv / PDF - export to any of the four with a native save dialog; PDF output is pixel-accurate, no quirky page breaks.
- Print preview with orientation -
⌘Popens a real preview inside the app with Auto / Portrait / Landscape switcher and fit-to-width, so wide sheets don't get sliced mid-column. The standard system print dialog lets you pick the printer. - Unsaved-changes guard - every edit marks the workbook dirty; the title bar shows a
•marker, and New / Open / Quit prompts Save / Don't Save / Cancel before discarding work. - Drag-and-drop + Open With - drop a spreadsheet from Finder or Explorer onto the window, or right-click Open With → SheetCafe. Registered as an alternate handler for the three extensions so it never fights Excel or Numbers for the default.
- Native macOS menu bar - proper SheetCafe / File / Edit / View / Window menus with standard
⌘shortcuts; Edit menu uses native Undo / Redo / Cut / Copy / Paste so in-cell editing feels right. - Close-to-tray on macOS - clicking the window's
Xor pressing⌘Whides the window; click the dock icon to bring it back. Only⌘Q(with the save prompt) actually quits. - Offline, no account - runs entirely on your machine. Files stay on disk where you put them. No cloud sync, no telemetry, no login.
How it works
Launch SheetCafe and open a file from the ribbon, a native picker, a Finder drag, or by double-clicking an .xlsx in your file manager - the same workbook always lands in the same editor. Edit with the full ribbon, then hit ⌘S / Ctrl+S to overwrite the original, or use Save As for .xls / .csv / .pdf. Print opens a true preview in the app so you can flip orientation and fit-to-width before anything reaches the printer.
Everything runs locally on your machine - no cloud, no upload, no waiting. Files are read and written using the same engine professional spreadsheet tools use, so what you save is exactly what Excel would save. The unsaved-changes guard means you never lose edits to a misclick.
Perfect for
- Anyone who just wants a desktop xlsx editor - no browser tab; opens in a second and saves where you expect.
- Quick edits on files you receive - double-click an emailed
.xlsx, tweak a cell, hit⌘S, send it back. Format survives the round-trip. - Printing spreadsheets that actually fit the page - fit-to-width and the orientation switcher make wide sheets printable without manual page setup.
- Converting between formats - open a
.csv, save it as.xlsx; open an.xls, export it to.pdf; all from one Save As menu. - Privacy-conscious users - fully offline, no account, no telemetry; files never leave your machine.
