MochaMusic

Turn your messy music folders into a library worth browsing

Updated September 2026 · v1.5.6

Screenshots

MochaMusic is a proper music player for the songs you already own. Point it at the folders where your music lives and it builds a real library out of them - covers, albums, artists, play counts and a Date Added that actually knows when each track arrived.

Nothing streams and nothing uploads. There is no account to make, no library to "sync", and no feed deciding what you hear next. Your files stay exactly where they are on your Mac, and MochaMusic just plays them.

Highlights

  1. Folders that stay in step - add as many music folders as you like and MochaMusic watches them. Drop in an album, rename a file, move a folder, retag something in another app: the library updates itself, and it never rescans everything to do it.
  2. Date Added, properly - the date a track entered your library is remembered for good. Renaming or moving a file does not reset it, so sorting on it keeps giving the right answer years later, and the library opens on that sort.
  3. A track list you can actually sort - click any column to sort by title, artist, album, genre, year, length, date added or play count; click again to reverse it. The list stays smooth with thousands of tracks.
  4. Browse by album and artist - a grid of covers, with a generated plaque for anything missing artwork, so nothing in your library looks like a blank row.
  5. Playlists that behave - make them, rename them in place, drag tracks in from anywhere, drag to reorder. Moving a file on disk never knocks a track out of a playlist.
  6. Fix your tags without leaving the app - edit title, artist, album, album artist, year, track and disc numbers, genre and cover art, and MochaMusic writes them straight into the files. Select a whole album and set the year or genre on all of it at once.
  7. Save a link straight into your library - paste an address into Import and it lands in the library, tagged and filed like everything else. A list shows you what it found first, so you choose how many tracks to take before anything downloads.
  8. Plays what you own - MP3, M4A, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF and Ogg, with embedded artwork read straight from the files.
  9. Built for the keyboard - space to play or pause, arrows to scrub or skip, and a search box that filters as you type.

How it works

Open MochaMusic and press Select to choose a music folder. It reads the tags and cover art out of every track it finds, shows you the progress while it works, and keeps the window usable the whole time. When it is done, your library is there - and it stays there. The next launch is instant, because MochaMusic only looks at what changed.

From then on it is the player you already know how to use: a list of your songs on the right, your library and playlists on the left, and a bar along the bottom with the artwork, the scrubber, shuffle, repeat and volume.

Perfect for

  1. Anyone with a music folder built up over years who wants it to feel like a library again
  2. People who buy albums from Bandcamp, rip CDs, or keep high-quality FLAC files
  3. Listeners who would rather not hand their taste to a recommendation engine
  4. Anyone tidying up a messy collection - wrong titles, missing years, no cover art
  5. Working offline, on a plane, or anywhere the connection is not worth relying on
