CheckersCafe is checkers the way it should feel on a desktop: a real green-and-buff board, pieces that slide and knock, and an opponent that actually thinks. Pick a difficulty, click a piece, and the game is on.

Everything runs on your own computer. No account to start a game, no server to wait for, no ads between moves - the whole engine ships inside the app and works on a plane.

Highlights

1. Five difficulty levels that really are different - Rookie is blind to danger and gives pieces away the way a beginner does; Master searches deep and counts every exchange out to the end before it commits. Each level was measured against the one below it over twenty-four full games, and every rung wins its series.
2. A flat board and a 3D board, one click apart - the flat view is quick and precise; the 3D view is a real slab you can orbit, zoom and tilt, with moulded pieces that arc over the ones they take and cast proper shadows.
3. Two sets of rules in one app - the classic 8x8 game with twelve pieces a side, or 10x10 international draughts where men take backwards, kings fly the length of a diagonal, and you must always take the longest chain available.
4. Captures are compulsory, and the app makes that easy - every piece that can take is offered, the squares it can land on are marked, the pieces it would remove are ringed, and a multi-jump is played out one hop at a time so you can see the chain build.
5. Two players at one desk - hand the keyboard back and forth in hot-seat mode, with the same board, the same take-back and the same move list. In the 3D view, Flip swings the camera round to the other player's side.
6. Take back as much as you like - one Take back returns your move and the computer's reply together, and clicking any move in the strip rewinds the whole game to that point so you can try a different line.
7. Ask for a hint when you are stuck - the strongest level suggests a move and marks it on the board, so a hard position becomes a lesson instead of a loss.
8. Standard notation, kept for you - every move is written in the numbered-square notation the game has always used, so you can read a game back or follow one from a book.
9. Your record, kept quietly - wins, draws and losses are tallied per difficulty, so you can see the moment level 3 stops being a challenge.
10. Light and dark, and it sounds right - the board, the pieces and the whole window follow your theme, and every move, take and crowning has its own sound you can switch off.

How it works

Open the app and an 8x8 board is already waiting, with the computer set to Casual and you playing red. Click one of your pieces and the squares it can move to light up; click one of them to move. If a capture is available anywhere on the board you have to take it - that is the rule the game is built on - and the app only offers you the moves that obey it.

Reach the far row and your piece is crowned, gains a second disc and can move backwards as well. Take every piece your opponent has, or leave them with no legal move, and you have won.

Want it harder or easier? Pick a different level in the sidebar at any time. Want to play a friend instead? Switch the opponent to 2 Players and pass the machine back and forth. Want the bigger game? Switch the board to 10x10 and the rules change with it. Want to see it in three dimensions? Flip the view to 3D and drag to look around.
