PianoTrainer

Drill scales, chords, sevenths and fifths in all 12 keys

Updated August 2026 · v1.5.6

Screenshots

PianoTrainer turns the MIDI keyboard already sitting on your desk into a practice partner. It shows you a scale or a chord, waits, and listens - and it only moves on once your fingers get it right. No metronome guilt, no video to pause and rewind, just the next thing to play.

Everything runs on your own computer. There is no account to create, nothing to upload, and the sound works even with the network switched off.

Highlights

  1. It hears what you actually played - connect any MIDI keyboard over USB and PianoTrainer reads the notes straight from the instrument, so a near miss is a miss.
  2. Four things to drill - scales, chords, seventh chords and fifths, each cycling through every key so you stop practising only the comfortable ones.
  3. A quiz that tests the theory - questions on the circle of fifths for the days you want to understand what your hands are doing.
  4. An on-screen keyboard when you need one - notes light up as you play, and you can click them if the real keyboard is not plugged in yet.
  5. Sound that works offline - the grand piano is built into the app, so practice does not stop when the wifi does.
  6. Six languages - English, German, French, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese.

How it works

Plug your keyboard in, open PianoTrainer, and pick it from the device list in the sidebar. Choose what you want to work on, and the app shows the next scale or chord on screen.

Play it. The notes you hit light up, and when the shape is complete PianoTrainer moves to the next key. If you do not have a keyboard nearby, turn on the on-screen piano and click your way through instead.

Perfect for

  1. Beginners who know the notes but not yet the shapes
  2. Self-taught players filling in the theory they skipped
  3. Students warming up before a lesson or an exam
  4. Anyone who wants ten focused minutes at the keyboard, not an hour of video
