CamCascara

CamCascara turns the webcam you already own into something you can shoot with. Set the shot up while you watch it, put a different room behind you, frame it for a phone, run a look over it, and record the whole thing to a video with sound - exactly as it appears on screen.

What makes the take good is that nothing is guesswork: focus, exposure and colour are measured live, the sharp edges are painted for you, and the burnt out highlights are striped on the picture itself. If the camera is lying about what it sends, you find out before you press Record rather than afterwards.

Highlights

1. Record exactly what you see - press Record and you get a video of the picture in front of you, with the look, the background and the frame already in it. No export, no second pass, nothing to line up afterwards. A clock on the picture tells you how long you have been running, and the file is written as it goes, so a long take never sits waiting at the end.
2. Sound, handled properly - the microphone opens with the recording and stops with it, so the light is on for exactly as long as the red dot. Turn it off for a silent take. If the microphone cannot be used, you are told before the take rather than after you have a silent clip.
3. Put a different room behind you - choose an image, or blur the one you are actually in. On macOS it finds the person by itself, so no backdrop is needed; anywhere else, hang a plain sheet of any colour, click that colour on the picture to pick it, and tune how much is keyed, how soft the edge is and how much colour spill is pulled off your shoulders.
4. Shoot vertical on a camera that cannot - no webcam sends 9:16, so CamCascara composes the landscape picture it does send into a 1080 × 1920 frame. Fill it and lose the sides, or sit the picture inside it at 16:9, 4:3 or square. It prints how much of the camera survives each choice instead of cropping quietly, and the frame is in the recording, not just on screen.
5. Thirteen live filters, switchable while it runs - grayscale, contrast, saturation, sharpen, blur, edge detection, false colour, invert, posterize, sepia, and three colour vision simulations. Hold the space bar at any moment to see the original underneath, and whichever one is on when you record is the one in the file.
6. Focus you can steer by - a live score for how much fine detail is in the picture. Turn the ring, or move the camera, and watch it climb. Focus peaking paints the sharp edges green, so you can see what is holding focus before you commit a take to it.
7. Light it by the numbers - brightness, how much of the frame is blown out or crushed to black, a histogram, and whether your lighting is running warm or cool. Turn on clipping stripes and the burnt out areas are marked on the picture itself, so a lamp gets moved before the take instead of a shot getting binned after it.
8. Guides and a mirror - rule of thirds, a fine grid or a centre cross over the image, and a mirror toggle so you can frame yourself the way you are used to seeing yourself. The mirror is in the picture the app writes, not a trick of the preview, so a capture never comes out the wrong way round.
9. Stills, at full resolution - one button saves the picture with the filter, the background and the frame baked in exactly as you see them. Shoot the same scene through four looks and compare them afterwards.
10. Everything you made, waiting where the picture was - the last stills and clips sit under the preview whenever the camera is off, newest first, with the size and how long ago. Open one, or jump to it in its folder, without going looking for it.
11. Every camera you have, in one list - built in, plugged in, or a virtual one from another app. Switch between them while everything keeps running, and pick the one that actually looks best rather than the one that happened to be selected.
12. The numbers the camera does not volunteer - the exact resolution and aspect ratio it is sending, the frame rate measured from the frames as they arrive, and the frame rate the camera claims. When those two disagree you have found the reason your footage stutters, and you have found it before shooting rather than in the edit.
13. Ask for a size and see what you get - pick any format the camera advertises. If it quietly hands back something smaller, CamCascara says so instead of pretending, so nothing is recorded at a size it was never really delivering.
14. It tells you when the problem is a setting, not the camera - a blocked camera and a broken camera look identical in most software. CamCascara names which one it is, lists the hardware it can see, and takes you straight to the switch that fixes it. It does the same for the microphone.
15. Nothing leaves the machine - no account, no upload, no telemetry. The picture is drawn on screen, and it becomes a file only when you press Capture or Record - a file that stays on your own computer. The camera light, and the microphone with it, goes out the moment you put the window away.

How it works

Open it and it finds every camera attached, asks for permission once, and starts showing you the first one. Pick the camera you want to shoot on from the list on the left; the panel on the right fills in immediately with resolution, aspect ratio, measured frame rate, a focus score, a brightness meter, a histogram and the colour balance.

Now set the shot up. Turn on focus peaking and move until the edges you care about light up. Turn on clipping stripes and pull the lamp back until they stop. Choose the size you want to shoot at, and if the camera cannot really deliver it you are told rather than left to find out later.

Choose the room behind you: an image, a blur, or nothing at all. Want it phone-shaped? Choose the vertical frame and decide how much of the camera to keep. Run along the filter strip if you want a look on it - the change is instant, and holding the space bar drops back to the untouched picture for a comparison.

Then press Record. What was on screen is what lands in the file, sound and all, and a clock on the picture keeps count. Press Capture instead for a still. Both are named with the camera and the time, and both appear in the list under the preview the moment the camera goes off, so the file you just made is one click from where you made it.
