AwakeBean

Keeps your computer awake on a timer, or while chosen apps run

Updated August 2026 · v1.6.3

Screenshots

AwakeBean keeps your Mac awake for exactly as long as you need it to, and not a minute longer. It lives in the menu bar as a small coffee bean: one click and the screen stays on through the presentation, the render, the long download.

No account, no window to manage, no background service phoning anywhere. AwakeBean asks macOS directly to hold off sleep, and it lets go the moment your timer ends or you click the bean again.

Highlights

  1. One click to stay awake - click the bean in the menu bar and your Mac stops dozing off. Click it again and everything goes back to normal. The icon fills in while it is working, so you always know which state you are in.
  2. Timers that end by themselves - 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 5 hours, or any number of minutes you type. The countdown sits next to the icon so you can see it at a glance, and when it runs out your Mac sleeps normally again. No more discovering three days later that you left it on.
  3. Turns itself on for the apps you choose - pick your video editor, your build tool, your download manager, and AwakeBean handles the rest. It switches on when one of them is open and off when the last one quits, so you never have to remember.
  4. Pick the apps from a real list - the app picker shows everything in your Applications folders with its icon and its name. Nothing to look up, nothing to type.
  5. Choose what stays awake - keep the display on too when you are reading or presenting, or let the screen go dark while the Mac keeps working through a long export. Your battery will notice the difference.
  6. Out of your way by design - no Dock icon, no window taking up space, nothing in your app switcher. Just the bean, where you would expect it.
  7. Remembers how you like it - your timer, your display preference and your app list are all still there next time. Turn on Launch at Login and it is ready before you are.
  8. Light and dark, like the rest of your Mac - the menu bar icon follows your menu bar, and the settings window follows your system appearance.
AwakeBean

How it works

AwakeBean starts in the menu bar. Left-click the bean to keep your Mac awake and left-click it again to stop. Right-click it for the full menu: how long to stay awake, whether the display should stay on, and a way into settings.

Open Settings when you want the app triggers. Add an app, flip the switch, and AwakeBean watches for it from then on - your Mac stays awake while it is open and sleeps normally once it is closed. You can also tell AwakeBean to react only while an app is the one you are actually looking at.

Perfect for

  1. Presenting, demoing or teaching, where a screen that dims mid-sentence is the worst kind of interruption
  2. Long renders, exports, builds and backups that must finish while you are away from the desk
  3. Big downloads and file transfers you do not want a sleeping Mac to interrupt
  4. Reading, following a recipe or watching something without touching the trackpad every two minutes
  5. Anyone who has ever come back to a Mac that went to sleep at the worst possible moment
