FontSiphon: Download and Activate 1,946 Google Fonts
FontSiphon carries the whole Google Fonts catalogue, 1,946 families, browsable offline and previewable in your own words before anything is installed. Downloading a family writes the real files into your own font folder, so it arrives switched on. The switch is what parks a family later, without deleting it.
A font menu with a thousand entries is a list you stop scrolling. You rely on the top ten. The rest become a dense block of noise you have to page past every time you open a text document. Leaving hundreds of typefaces active clutters the interface and makes finding the one you actually need a chore.
FontSiphon treats typography as something you switch on when you need it and park when you finish. It carries the whole Google Fonts catalogue, 1,946 families, ready to browse and preview offline. Before anything is fetched
Refresh the library today and the count hits 1,946. That number is not a hardcoded label. It is the exact size of the catalogue FontSiphon holds, and pulling a refresh replaces it with a live copy from Google, so it moves when the library moves. A trimmed snapshot of this catalogue is compiled into the app. The library browses offline on a fresh install, before anything is fetched.
Search by family, style, designer, or foundry. Filter the results by classification, narrowing the view to sans, serif, slab, script, display, monospace, or symbol. You preview every family in your own words before anything is installed, because the app draws the specimen from the font's own bytes rather than asking the operating system for a font it doesn't have yet. A true preview.
Families you have already installed lead the list whatever sort you pick. The handful you actually installed are not lost down 1,946 rows. The list pages 60 rows at a time as you scroll, rather than hiding the next batch behind a button.
The real font files
Installing a Google family downloads the real font files onto the machine and writes them into your own font folder. That is the directory the operating system reads to decide which fonts exist. The family is available to every app on the computer as soon as it lands. It's not a temporary preview that only works inside FontSiphon. There is no second step to press after downloading. The font arrives switched on.
Getting this right requires specific instructions to the server. FontSiphon asks Google for every script the family carries, not just the default Latin subset. That default is a trap. If an app requests Open Sans without specifying, it comes back as 35 KB with 51 of the 67 Vietnamese letters absent. Noto Sans JP returns as 34 KB of Latin instead of 5.3 MB, giving you a Japanese font with no Japanese in it. Nothing errors when that happens. The specimen just quietly renders in a fallback face.
The app deliberately uses Google's older CSS endpoint. The modern endpoint only ever hands back woff2, which macOS will not install. The older one answers with TrueType files. Installed files are named the way a designer would name them, like Inter-BoldItalic.ttf or PlayfairDisplay-Black.ttf. One button installs every weight of a family. If a download arrives truncated, it is rejected rather than written to disk. If the app can't write to your font folder, it says so up front instead of failing after the click. Uninstalling a Google family only removes the files FontSiphon installed. It never touches a font you put there yourself.
Out of the folder the system reads
The switch is what you use afterwards, and it works on a downloaded Google font exactly like any other font in your own font folder. Deactivating a family moves its file out of the folder the system reads and into FontSiphon's own vault. Activating it moves it back where it came from. The file's location is the state. That is why the change shows up in every app immediately and survives a restart.
Nothing is deleted. One click puts the face back in your active menus. If something else has taken the original filename while the font was parked, the returning file is placed beside it rather than overwriting it. Deleting a font file is a separate action entirely, and one that asks for confirmation first.
Collections let you group the fonts a brand or a client needs. You switch the whole set on when you start the layout and off when you finish.
Parsed out of the font's own tables
The app scans your own font folder, the one shared by every account, and the directories that came with the system. Every family is rendered in its own typeface, with your own preview text and a size slider from 10 to 120 pixels. The layouts adapt to your preference, offering list, grid, or waterfall views.
Metadata is parsed out of the font's own tables, not asked of the system. That includes family and style names, weight, width, glyph count, units per em, variable-font axes, designer, foundry, version, and the licence. A .ttc collection file expands into one entry per face inside it.
The character map shows every glyph the font actually contains, drawn in that font. A click copies the character to the clipboard. Because the app reads the file directly instead of asking the operating system, a deactivated font still shows a real specimen. You never have to reinstall something just to see what it looks like. Double-click a .ttf, .otf, or .ttc file on your computer and it opens as a proper specimen first, offering to install it only once you have seen it.
Static instances
Downloading a Google font needs the network. Browsing all 1,946 families doesn't, because the snapshot ships inside the app, but fetching the files themselves requires a connection. A variable family arrives as static weights. What lands on disk is one file per weight, not the variable font. The app reads and shows variable axes for fonts on disk, and lists them in the Google row, but the install is static instances.
The shared font folder needs administrator rights, and FontSiphon does not ask for them. The system font folder is protected by the operating system. Fonts in either location are marked locked with a plain explanation, rather than showing a toggle that would fail after you click it. The app suggests moving a copy into your own font folder if you want to manage it. A .ttc file moves as one item carrying several faces, so switching one face necessarily switches its file-mates, and the app says so.
On Windows, switching a font tells every running app the font table changed. Without that broadcast, an already open document keeps showing the old list until its application is restarted. The broadcast is sent with a one-second timeout so one hung window cannot wedge the toggle. On macOS, the folder itself is the registration, so there is nothing to broadcast. A font you switch on mid-session is previewed from its own bytes inside the app, because the app's own window will not see a newly arrived font until it restarts. This was measured rather than assumed.
Classification comes from the font's own descriptor, with a name heuristic as a fallback. A file that describes itself wrongly is listed the way it describes itself. Trattatello calls itself a rounded sans. A few encoding-table fonts carry no outlines and cannot be parsed at all. The scan counts them and says so instead of failing.
