Timing alternative app for Mac & Windows

People use Timing to see where their hours go without starting a timer. CoffeeTime does that on Mac and Windows, in a download a quarter the size, and it comes with a membership instead of a $108 a year plan.

CoffeeTime, an alternative to Timing

Most people get Timing for one reason: to see where the day actually went without starting a timer. Then they use that to bill a client or rein in the time they lose to distractions. That's a good idea, but Timing's cheapest plan is $108 a year, or $11 a month, and it covers one Mac.

CoffeeTime does that core job. It quietly records which app and window you're in, pauses when you're idle, and turns it into a timeline, a daily dashboard and reports you can hand to a client. There's nothing to start or stop, and your data stays on your own computer.

Light, quick, and on Mac and Windows

  • A fraction of the size. CoffeeTime for Mac is an 8.7 MB download. Timing's Mac download is about 35 MB. On Windows, CoffeeTime is about 3 MB.
  • Stays out of the way. It runs in the background, starts at login if you want, and keeps today's total in the menu bar or tray.
  • Not just for Mac. There are builds for Mac, Windows and Windows on ARM. Timing is Mac only.

What you can do in it

  • See your day at a glance. The Today dashboard shows a category donut, top apps and top sites.
  • Search your whole history. Every session sits in a scrollable timeline, and you can search apps and windows across all of it.
  • Sort apps in one click. File apps into Work, Neutral or Distraction, auto-sort the rest, and get a productivity score.
  • Track projects. Assign sessions and manual entries to a project, see which apps ate its hours, and archive it when it's done.
  • Export for invoicing. Run a 7-day, 30-day or custom report and export it to CSV or PDF.
  • Set daily goals. Pick a productive target and a distraction limit, then watch them fill up on Today.

Who it's for

Freelancers and consultants who bill by the hour and need a per-client summary at the end of the month. Developers who want to know how much of the day was deep work and how much went to context-switching. Anyone trying to cut down on distractions with a real number instead of a guess. And people who'd rather their activity log never left their machine.

When to stick with Timing

If you want your time synced across several Macs and a web app you can check from your phone, keep Timing. Same if you rely on its AI summaries, automatic meeting detection, or its ClickUp, Linear and GrandTotal integrations. Timing also has team features on its higher plans, like shared projects and seeing your team's hours. CoffeeTime keeps everything on one computer and has none of that.

What it costs

CoffeeTime isn't sold on its own. It comes with a getapps.cafe membership, from $1.99 a month on the annual plan, and that includes every other app on the menu too. A Solo plan covers one device, Family covers five. There's a 7-day free trial, so you can track a few real workdays before paying anything.
