Skitch was the fast, friendly way to annotate screenshots. A decade after Evernote abandoned it, the app is effectively dead: no Apple Silicon build, crashes on current macOS, and zero hope of fixes. Here is what to use instead.
What is Skitch, and why are you here?
Skitch launched in 2008 as a dead-simple screenshot annotator: capture a region, slap on an arrow, pixelate some text, save or share. Evernote (Bending Spoons) bought it in 2011, killed Windows/iOS/Android in January 2016, and stopped maintaining the Mac version shortly after. Free download (Mac App Store); Windows, iOS and Android versions were killed in January 2016. No paid tier.
The last meaningful update shipped roughly a decade ago. Skitch never got a native Apple Silicon build, so M-series Macs run it through Rosetta — when it runs at all. Users on recent macOS versions report crashes on launch, broken tools, and no Evernote sync. Bending Spoons (which acquired Evernote in 2023) has shown no interest in reviving it.

When should you keep Skitch?
You should not. Skitch is abandonware. It crashes on modern macOS, runs through Rosetta on Apple Silicon, and will never receive another update. The question is not "when should I keep it" but "which replacement fits my workflow."
If Skitch still launches on your machine and you refuse to replace it until it stops working entirely, that day will arrive. When it does, start with macOS Markup and step up to Shottr or CreamShot X when you need more than the basics.
