Most people pick up Screen Studio for one trick: you record your screen, and it zooms in where you clicked, so a plain capture looks like a demo someone edited by hand. It's a great trick. But Screen Studio is now subscription only, at $9 a month on the yearly plan or $29 month to month, and without a plan you can't export a video at all.
ScreenMotion is a small Mac app built around that same idea. It logs your cursor and clicks while you record, then turns them into zooms on its own. When you hit stop, the zooms are already there. Drag one if you disagree, then export.
Small, quick, and out of the way
- A fraction of the size. ScreenMotion is an 11.2 MB download. Screen Studio's Apple Silicon download is about 729 MB.
- Opens instantly. It's built on Apple's own frameworks, so it downloads in seconds and starts right up.
- One permission. It asks for Screen Recording and nothing else. Your recording is a file on your disk, and the app never phones home.
What you can do in it
- Zooms that place themselves. It groups your clicks, moves in just before each one, holds, and eases out when you move on.
- A calm camera. Nearby zooms merge instead of bouncing in and out, and the frame only pans once your cursor leaves the middle.
- Four dials, not keyframes. Zoom level, hold time, speed and how eagerly zooms merge.
- A timeline you can edit. Every zoom is a block you can drag, stretch or leave alone.
- A finished look. Gradient backdrop, padding, rounded corners and a soft shadow, baked in at full resolution.
- Sound in the same file. System audio and your mic are recorded in sync.
Who it's for
Founders posting a short product demo. Developers filing a bug report where the line you clicked has to be readable. Teachers recording a quick walkthrough. And anyone writing release notes who wants a fifteen-second clip that looks deliberate without an evening in an editor.
When to stick with Screen Studio
Screen Studio does a lot more. It records your webcam with layouts like split screen and camera cutout, lets you edit by transcript and cut filler words, adds captions, cleans up your mic, records an iPhone or iPad over USB, exports GIFs, and gives you shareable links with comments. If your videos lean on any of that, Screen Studio is the better pick. ScreenMotion does the auto zoom and the framing, and that's it.
What it costs
ScreenMotion isn't sold on its own. It comes with a getapps.cafe membership, from $1.99 a month on the annual plan, and that includes every other app on the menu too. There's a 7-day free trial, so you can record a real demo before paying anything.
