Camtasia alternative app for Mac

Most people use Camtasia to record and polish a quick app walkthrough. ScreenMotion does that on a Mac with zooms that follow your clicks on their own, in an 11.2 MB app that comes with a membership instead of a $179.88 yearly plan.

ScreenMotion, an alternative to Camtasia

Most people open Camtasia for one job: record a walkthrough of an app, tidy it up, and send it off. Camtasia does that and a lot more. It's a full editor with tracks, transitions, callouts and quizzes. But the plan that gets you the editor without a watermark, Essentials, is $179.88 a year. That's a lot to pay every year for a two-minute demo.

ScreenMotion is a Mac screen recorder that adds the zooms for you. It watches where you click, moves the camera in on each click, and pulls back out when you move on. When you stop recording, the editor opens with the zooms already in place. Drag one if you disagree, then export.

Small, quick, and out of the way

  • An 11.2 MB download. Camtasia's Mac system requirements ask for 4 GB of free disk space. ScreenMotion is built on Apple's own frameworks and downloads in seconds.
  • Opens instantly. It's a native Mac app. Nothing is uploaded and it never phones home. Your recording is a file on your disk.
  • One permission. It asks for Screen Recording and nothing else. Not Accessibility, not Input Monitoring.

What you can do in it

  • Zooms you don't place by hand. ScreenMotion groups your clicks and turns each group into a zoom that starts just before the click.
  • A calm camera. Nearby zooms merge instead of bouncing, and the frame only pans once your cursor leaves the middle.
  • Four dials for the feel. Set zoom level, hold time, speed in, and how eagerly zooms merge.
  • A simple timeline. Every zoom is a block you can drag or stretch.
  • A finished look. Gradient backdrop, padding, rounded corners and a soft shadow, baked in at full resolution.
  • Sound in one file. System audio and your mic are recorded into the video, in sync.

Who it's for

You make short product demos, bug reports for a teammate, quick tutorials, or a fifteen-second clip for your release notes. You want the viewer to see the button you clicked without spending the evening on keyframes.

When to stick with Camtasia

Camtasia is the bigger tool, and for some work it's the right one. It runs on Windows and Mac, records your webcam, and gives you multitrack editing with transitions, animations and callouts. It imports PowerPoint slides, generates captions, and exports quizzes as SCORM for a course platform. If you build full training courses, that's what you're paying for. ScreenMotion is Mac only and sticks to recording, zooms and a clean frame.

What it costs

ScreenMotion comes with a getapps.cafe membership, from $1.99 a month on the annual plan. A Solo membership covers one device. Try it free for 7 days first.
